I found 'Stranger by the Lake' an odd mix. On the one hand, I loved the stillness it captured. Yet another beautiful film in the NZ film festival, some of the shots of the idyllic beach setting were breathtaking. There were times when the camera lost our protagonist, and simply explored the setting. At times this meant capturing the voyeuristic nature of the cruising context, but other times it simply panned off to take in the beauty of he surroundings.But on the other hand, it was the strange overlay of the thriller narrative with a investigator character who must have played some symbolic role. I couldn't understand how he worked in the world of the film. He roamed like someone who didn't belong in Guiraudie's realm and was more than just a stark contrast to the other characters, he was a sore thumb. The thriller element worked on the erotic level, but not on the police procedural.It was the attraction and intrigue generated from the intense gazes across the beach that made the dynamic so fascinating. The layers of attraction were peeled away, and I found myself feeling sorry for Franck as he searched for a connection in such a wrong wrong place. The centrals couple's second swimming scene was a worthy centrepiece: the tension in preparing for death, attempting futilely to form a bond that is mistaken for love. A sad, and entrancing tale.

Apparently this film was written before 127 Hours and Buried so those folks who want to claim rip off would be wasting their time. A man is buried in his car after a mud slide. So basically you have another "how do you fill one man in a confined space for 90 minutes" movie. The claustrophobic feel is top level here. You feel for the guy and his predicament and how will he ever get out. The problem again, is the filler. We have to suffer through him video taping himself and other babble that isn't really interesting and clearly done to fill up time. I fast forwarded through stuff here and there. Also dream sequences, which I personally hate because they do not move the story forward. But again, they're trying to fill 90 minutes. That said, it's not bad at all. The lead actor has skills and pulled off the part and the movie was filmed well. Now I will never drive the Hollywood Hills after a hard rain.

I think reviews should be based on the content of the movies, not a person's personal beliefs. Majority of people know and have their own opinions of what Angels are, so why bring in the "biblical" references to this or any other spiritual movie. We all have our own Spiritual/Religious views and if they differ from someone else - so be it. Enjoy the movie - I personally loved it for light entertainment, a far cry from the over produced Violent/catastrophe end of days type movie. The players were run of mill with the acting and seemed to keep to the storyline. Whatever your interpretation of the afterlife is - this is a movie most are going to enjoy.

As soon as I saw the very first frames of camera-work on this movie, I know this was going to be bad. Another one of these horrible 'found footage' movies, mockumentaries, or call them whatever need be.The story in this movie is about conservationist Larry Black and his brother Ben who travel to the lush jungles of Indonesia in search of the endangered leopards. With the help of two native Indonesians, the foursome venture into the thick jungle, hoping to find proof of these endangered great cats. But they come to face the horror of being stalked by something ferocious.Right, well the storyline itself had somewhat of something that resembled the possibility of being interesting, but it was all ruined and shot to pieces (pardon the pun) by some really questionable and horrible camera-work. I am pretty sure that my three year old son could manage to hold a camera more steady than what you see it practically all of these 'found footage' movies.So the audience is to believe that there is some hybrid feline / man running around out there in the Indonesian jungle? And better yet, that these brothers and their Indonesian trackers died to make this documentary. And given the ending to the movie, then just exactly how would this 'found footage' have been recovered from the creatures den? It was just so lame, so horribly, epically lame.The only reason that the movie doesn't get a 1 out of 10 rating is because it is somewhat better than watching a screen of only static. But, mind you, not that much better. This movie gets a 2 out of 10 rating simply because of the lousy camera-work and the whole faked and staged 'found footage' genre is generally a waste of time, space and film.

Saw this at SXSW and I must admit it was very well done. This won the Audience Award for the Midnighters at the festival and it is wholeheartedly deserved. The film is a hybrid genre film with a constantly shifting tone of hilarity, drama, thrills, and extremely dark themes. The story follows everyman Craig (Pat Healy, who should finally get some deserved recognition for his extremely demanding role in this) who is down on his luck after having a really bad day. He hits the local bar on the way home from work and sees an old high school buddy (Ethan Embry, in an against-type role that completely works) and the two meet up with a strange couple that wants to have a drink with them (David Koechner and Sara Paxton, who are both deliciously hilarious and mysterious). The four then have what can only be described as a truly horrific night and that is all I really want to say about it because the less you know the better. The concept of the film is laid out easily and quickly, which is developed fully throughout the film as the stakes are raised higher and higher with every passing minute.I must say that I was very happy to see the movie take so many risks. The content of the film is definitely not for the faint at heart, but if you like envelope-pushing pieces than this is the film for you. Im sure this will divide audiences, but the theater I was in had a great energy and made the film really fun to watch. The director EL Katz introduced the film and told the audience that "it is okay to laugh." After seeing the film, I understand why he said that. There are so many uncomfortable, cringe-inducing moments in the film that the only thing to do is either to curl up in the fetal position or laugh your head off. I had no clue where it was going and the final image in the film will go down as a classic final shot. It is perfection. People will be definitely talking about this one. It is highly entertaining, the performances are excellent, the writing is tight, and the content of the film is entirely original and unpredictable. I actually saw it twice during SXSW and it was even better a second time. Tons of twists and turns, so please DO NOT spoil it for yourself. Go into it with little knowledge and enjoy the twisted mayhem.

I saw this at Pifan 2013 in Bucheon, South Korea, and while I've seen several Danish movies that were so-so to lackluster, this one was entertaining. Caspar is a young man who has a single mother and two siblings in Copenhagen. He burglarizes homes and sells the stuff he steals to an Arab thug, Jamal, who cheats him all the time. Caspar is later offered a job with a pimp named Bjorn and starts to earn good money. But Jamal is angry that Caspar is working for someone else and seeks revenge.The movie was interesting and the characters seemed real, though I don't know much about Denmark. I'd say this was worth a watch, though the ending seemed a bit flat.

Best Friends Forever (2013) is a movie written by Brea Grant and Vera Miao, directed by the first, and starring both of them as the main characters. The movie starts by alluding to the characters personalities and their pasts, their tensions and their shared relationship. The pacing is a bit slow and explores the apocalypse through the eyes of two women who are oblivious to it for the most part. It explores the harsh realities of a nuclear attack; the vast number of casualties, the limited resources and the heightened levels of violence and rape, as well as police corruption. If you plan on watching this movie, there are some parts which are hilarious, some parts that may be awkward and some disgusting. Overall, it requires you to get in touch with the characters and to see the intersecting approach of race and gender in times of crises.The storyline is well thought out and does have an empowering aspect (the female is not simply being objectified) as well as trying to move past simple stereotypes. It tries to stay away from the gore, the actual explosion and focuses on survival, and how to move on. Not wanting to spoil the character's and their separate journeys, it is safe to say that the two main characters are juxtaposed at times, but it is their bond that helps them throughout the film as well as provides meaning. Both Harriet and Reba gain a sense of self by separating themselves from the other; and through this gain a sense of individuality. The sound, lighting and pace are all decent to good, and help to set the tone for the movie. I found this movie to be extremely worth the 88 minute version (IMDB says 113, so I might have seen a different cut). I would definitely recommend it to people who want to see some character development, a well written and directed piece, and can sit through a slower paced film. The trailer does not capture the film at all, it is not as dark as it is painted, and much of the movie takes place outside time in a way (though supporting characters do have knowledge of the apocalypse and their actions are determined by that). The ratings for this film will range from 3-7 on average, but because the film does what it seeks to do, does not try too hard, stray from their premise, I would rate it a 8/10.

What can I say that probably already hasn't been said of "found footage" movies. Some can carry it off, at least enough so you stay focused on what you are watching and can view it to the very end. Others? Not so much. I watched 616 Paranormal Incident in the hope that the trailer I saw gave me some indication of what to expect. I was deceived. The flow and premise of the story makes it unbelievable from the start. The characters and the roles they play are neither believable nor are they interesting enough to compel you to really "get into" this movie. It's almost as if every moment designed to make you jump and gasp in fright is like every other you've seen with movies of this genre and after a while you are left with a feeling of "been there, done that, not impressed". The location to me looked very much like the notorious Linda Vista Hospital in L.A., a notoriously active paranormal location that is soon to become apartments. To me, that would have made a better story for a movie than this did. I mean imagine it, creepy hospital shut down over charges of mistreatment of patients and with a long list of potential candidates for haunting it gets bought by a developer with designs on turning that facility into an apartment complex. That my friends is fodder for a real scary movie! Some may fault the actors in this film for not delivering the movie as it was intended. It isn't their fault, you can only do so much with what you have and even the best actor in the realm of television or big screen could not have carried off this movie and saved it from its obvious lack of substance, story line or anything else that makes for a movie experience the audience can comprehend and enjoy. Don't shoot the messengers for this mishap, the actors did fine given what they had to work with. I thought that the makeup was somewhat well done. It was in line with what I have come to expect from these types of films but it was also done well enough that I didn't find myself rolling on the floor laughing at the attempt. This movie, for me, was a one and done. If you have nothing else to watch, it is an option for you but only if you have nothing else to watch.

All Kyle's plans come to a halt after he is introduced to crystal meth one night. Slowly after, Kyle's life and everything in it begins spiraling out of control.Based on true events, Meth Head is a really eye opening experience. Jane Clark weaves a story about meth addiction without making it solely factual and focuses mostly on the deep emotional character journeys.Kyle isn't a man without issues. While he has a job and partner, Kyle is still desperate in seeking his father's approval, a politician who isn't supportive of his son's life. Lukas Haas plays Kyle, the meth addict and main character. Haas gives Kyle some great characteristics which make him vulnerable and sympathetic regardless of the mistakes he makes. It is sometimes painful to watch his meth addicted performance because of the glimpses of normality Haas portrays in the very beginning of the movie. The scenes near the very end are the most heart wrenching of Haas's portrayal. He is alone and weakening and the actor really delivers the fear and panic without being unnecessarily over the top.Luke (AKA Dusty) is one of the stand outs in the film. He's the dealer who initially introduces Kyle to meth. Somehow, there's a youthful innocence about him. Blake Berris portrays him as an addict who loves the drug but one who never sees his life spiraling so out of control. Dusty's easy friendship with Kyle is simple and co-dependent. Berris depicts Dusty as a man who doesn't really have anything left and whose addiction leads him to a very painful place. Berris's performance is understatedly powerful.Necar Zadegan plays Maia, the third member of the meth trio. Also an addict, Maia lost her daughter to social services for being an unfit mother and takes care of her grandmother who lives with her. Out of the three of them, Maia seems like the most balanced mentally regardless of her addiction and everything going on in her life. She somehow holds the group together. Zadegan portrays Maia in an almost mature way. Zadegan shows us through her eyes and reactions that she knows she's making mistakes but continues to use meth because it seems like the only thing keeping her from falling apart. Zadegan really uses her body language to portray Maia's inner turmoil.Wilson Cruz plays Julian, Kyle's partner. Cruz's portrayal of Julian is one of equal parts patience and frustration. Julian wants the best for Kyle and tries to help, but when things get out of control Julian shies away from pushing too hard for Kyle to see the error of his ways. With only the grim tug of his lips Cruz lets us know how hard Kyle's meth addiction is on Julian.The supporting actors (Scott Patterson as Kyle's father comes to mind specifically) do a great job of adding to the story while letting the focus be on Kyle and his journey through his addiction.With wonderful portrayals and a well written story, Jane Clark really brings home a powerful message while staying true to the emotional story of the characters. "Meth Head" is a well told and hypnotizing film from start to finish. The journey through addiction is well thought out and extremely realistic. The movie is hard to watch at times only because it takes the characters to very dark and harrowing places."Meth Head" is sad and tragic. Writer/director Jane Clark chooses to tell the story in a gritty and blunt manor that serves the purpose of informing and acknowledging the addiction to meth and the people it affects.

I really thought that there were some things that were out of bounds in the film genre, but I guess I was wrong. This film gives one explanation on how some men can get addicted to erotic asphyxiation. There is a sentence I thought I'd never say. Kelly (Antonia Campbell-Hughes) is a strange girl who apparently grew up with some major issues. I mean, I have had some wild times in my day, but nearly strangling someone during sex is not anything that I have ever thought about. Strangling them after we were done, now that's a different story (smile). Kelly looked like she was about twelve years old. She was really super thin and had absolutely no shape about her. At one point she was sitting in front of some food and I was thinking, please let this poor child put some kind of nourishment in her mouth. Apparently the lack of sustenance did not hamper her ability to over-power; I guess she had the same bone structure as Wolverine. As for Victor (Julian Morris), he seemed like just an average single guy looking to score. He hooks up with Kelly who introduces him to this violent form of sexual expression. I guess you don't know what you like until you have it for the first time. Things get even tougher if it becomes an obsession and everyone knows how hard it is to kick when you are obsessed. Not only was this an independent film, but it was a foreign film as well. There was a lot of sex and nudity in this film, but that is not unusual for films from other countries (especially Europe). I can remember seeing nudity on television at a very young age (not sex; but just body parts) and it seemed normal. It always makes me chuckle when movie-goers are surprised when an unexpected body part flashes across the screen. I am glad that we are not giving ratings for this film because there were times that some of the scenes were uncomfortable to watch. The one thing that I will give the director is that he did manage to touch on a subject that is not well known and possibly misunderstood. Luckily, I watch enough of Crime Scene Investigation stories that I have seen this affliction before. I am not sure if this film will be in wide release in this country, but it may do very well in Wales.

This movie was absolutely terrible. Save your money. If pretentiousness has ever been necessary in describing a film, this would be a prime example. It seems the only people that actually enjoyed this movie are those closely involved in its production. I'm sorry, but pornography and 'lost footage' just don't gel together to make a satisfying experience (I never felt 90 minutes go by this slowly). While attention to detail was evidently the focus during filming, the product as a whole is easily defeated by a lack of focus in polishing the script. However, in contrast to the odd subject matter, I seriously don't think it would have made a difference. If you want a great film that involves pornography, simply save your hard-earned dollars and go rent Boogie Nights (1997).

I normally don't write reviews here & just write a few words on films in my lists, but I couldn't help myself. The rating of this film is... 4? Really? FOUR?Meaning that Student of the Year has a better rating, Race 2 has a better rating, even Heroine has a better rating! This doesn't make sense. AT ALL.I Me Aur Main is a very sweet movie, with sweet music, sweet performances, and a sweet story. It's kind of Wake Up Sid with a love triangle (well, sort of) and a more adult take (I wouldn't call IMAM a coming of age story). Some found Wake Up Sid boring though a lot of other people recognize it is a very good film. Some found IMAM boring too, yet I still have to understand why the rating is low. You see tons of people complaining of brainless masala in Bollywood. There you have a touching story, and even if it doesn't touch you personally, nobody would call that dumb or brainless, and it gets a 4. Go figure.John Abraham is very credible here, I think it's the first time I've seen him so natural and expressive (the scene where he's drunk, the following scene the morning after, the last dialogue he has with Chitrangda, etc.). The rest of the cast is nice too. The performances are never over the top. The dialogues and story don't dawdle. The story manages to present a different kind of love triangle. It's not mind blowing but isn't your stereotypical love story either. There are some very well integrated humorous scenes. The film completely fulfill its mission of entertaining while giving an uplifting feeling (and not trying to fry your brains as some other movies do). An honest, simple, and fresh film.

A quaint little tale about a writer and a dysfunctional family. I really enjoyed this, it was funny, witty and had a good little message about life hidden between the absurdity of the characters. If you liked 'little miss sunshine' and/or 'meet the fockers' or that sort of movie you would prob enjoy this too.I was not sure what to expect from this as there was no review written for it yet, nor did I know much about the actors as I do not tend to watch a lot of TV series. Overall, however, I thought it was quite well acted. I noted that most of the directors previous works were all shorts so if this is his first attempt at a full length feature it is very impressive and I am sure we will be seeing more brilliance from him in the future.The story is well written too and the storyline is clever without trying to be overly clever, nor is the comedy element overly bearing. It is the type of movie that always leaves you wanting a little bit more and hopefully in time perhaps they could build on this little gem. I was a little bit down and bored this evening and this was just what I needed.

My wife took me to see "Unicorn City" as a belated Valentine's Day gift. I had never heard of it before, but she caught a blurb about it on the radio. Being a HUGE RPG nut and a fan of the movie "The Gamers: Dorkness Rising", I was excited to give this a shot. Last night, we attended a local screening and this is what I have to say about it:FANTASTIC!! "Unicorn City" is among the BEST independent efforts I've EVER seen! The writing was excellent, the characters were well-developed, the acting was spot-on, and the comedy was uproarious. This film is family-safe while still being engaging and entertaining. The production quality is high and the labor of love is obvious.I highly recommend this film to fans of comedies, RPGs, or the Nerd subculture. Also, if you are a fan of the Hess brothers and their work ("Napoleon Dynamite", "Gentlemen Broncos", etc), you will NOT be disappointed in the experience.

Saw this film at Tribeca and I LOVED it! It's one of those movies anyone can watch and get something out of. It made me laugh, cry, and self-reflect. For a film to do all of those things - that's powerful. I enjoyed the film for its humor, originality, and emotional dimension. When you are a kid and tragedy strikes it's hard to bounce back and feel sturdy in your surroundings - this film takes you back to that uneasiness and shows a view of life through the eyes of a motley crew of teenagers, figuring out their role in a series of eye-opening events on a quest for more than just an extinct duck. The characters are funny, well developed, and real. The coming of age concept is something I think everyone can relate to in some way or another. This film can remind of us that sometimes life itself is a quest with many surprises along the way and that we are never too old for an adventure. The fact that the film was co-written says a lot about the talent and caliber of the writers. I think the collaboration was a huge contribution to the realness of the characters and is what helps this film appeal to a variety of audiences. Props, Rob and Luke!

Lenny and Abbott are garbage truck drivers who service the homes of movie stars in Beverly Hills and Hollywood. They deal with the likes of Daryl Hannah, William Baldwin and Ben Stiller on daily basis. During a routine landfill trip, they discover Cuba Gooding Jr.'s Best Supporting Actor Oscar for "Jerry Maguire". As they trace their steps back to Cuba's house, wondering how the Oscar got in the trash, the news breaks out in the media and they become overnight celebrities. As they get sucked into the Hollywood scene and celebrity world, Lenny starts to dream big and loses it completely when he sees his dreams go up in smoke, while jeopardizing his friendship with Abbott, their jobs and their lives.
