Ilo Ilo tells a deceptively simple story with a lot of care and heart.The film is roughly set in the middle of the Asian financial crisis which also affected this small island nation.It tells of a friendship which grows between a young and rebellious boy who has just lost his beloved grandfather and his maid who arrives from Philippines to help his pregnant mother with her hectic schedule. The boys father loses his job and his mother juggles the tantrums of the brat and the increasing demands of her job which she needs to retain at all cost.Ilo Ilo demonstrates that the role of a nanny and domestic servant is very special.The tightrope that both employer and employee walk in balancing "you are a paid servant" and " you are a part of the family" can be so tight and the casualties so subtle that we don't notice the injuries until much later.In a dramatic scene, the school bully teases Jialer that his maid does not actually love him, she is just doing a job for which she is paid.This infuriates Jailer who lunges at the bully in a fit of rage. The director says the film was based on his personal experiences and how he felt that its very cruel for parents to allow maids to become like surrogate mothers and suddenly sack the maid for some reason.This can be a huge emotional trauma for the child who is unable to appreciate the reasons.While the film does not indict the system of foreign domestic helpers, it frames its argument for considering the human cost involved in a gentle way.The character of Teresa reminds us that those of us who were raised by nannies owe so much to them, and we often never acknowledge the debt fully.I completely admired the performance by Yan Yan Yeo who played Jailan's mother as the slightly humorless but ultimately kind woman.She navigates the role with the responsibility that the character must have felt, with her world crumbling around her in trying circumstances. Her performance is pitch perfect and I was amazed to know that her character was not conceived as being pregnant but after she was cast she became pregnant.She managed to convince the director to rewrite the role.Angela Bayani as the diminutive maid Teresa also delivers a stellar performance in a role that requires her to be vulnerable, strong, emotional, stoic and pragmatic at different points.Her chemistry with Jialer played by a very natural Koh Jia Ler is excellent and completely believable.The beauty of this film emerges when we juxtapose its sombre sepia images with the glitz and glamour of present day Singapore.Needless to say the intimate and de-glamorized cinematography by French lensman Benoit Soler plays a big role in creating this magic.The humour is one of the strengths of the film and although I may not have understood all the jokes about growing up in Singapore, going by the reaction of the audience Mr Chen has been successful in his efforts.Yes I did go in with very high expectations and the film did not meet all of them but that should not take anything away from this sweet and intimate film.The quality of the craft is impeccable and there are no rough edges in the film which is remarkable for a debutant director.I recently saw another period Singapore film – That Girl in Pinafore, which although not as elegant as Ilo Ilo tells an equally touching and boisterous tale of a group of teens being typical teens against the backdrop in xinyao music.These are the only two Singaporean films I have seen so far, but we foreigners who live in Singapore need to discover Singaporean cinema, which offers a window into its unique culture.Anthony Chen is the new poster boy of the fledgling film industry of Singapore after winning the Camera d'or at Cannes this year.This is his first full length feature after making eight highly acclaimed short films. Ilo Ilo is certainly a glittering debut film and hopefully the first in a long and interesting career.It may be Singapore's first Cannes winner but there must have been better films which have not garnered this kind of limelight.One hopes that Ilo Ilo is a watershed moment in Singapore cinema.

Home Sweet Home, directed by John K.D. Graham, is a cracking good psychological suspense and terror feature film adorned with cold-blooded and unexpected murders, filmed in remote New Mexico desert. Raquel Cantu plays Kristi, a ditzy but ruthless armed psychopath, accompanied by her criminal boyfriend. She gives us some comic moments early on. But in a change of mood, Graham skillfully uses Kristi's unpredictability to maintain a high level of tension that grips the audience throughout the movie. I found Krisi's weirdness one of the best aspects of the movie.The two terrorize Gwen (Alexandra Boylan) to drive her out of her home. You must see the movie to discover how Boylan digs deep into her acting talent to transform the terrified Gwen into a woman determined to survive and regain what is hers.Suffice to say I found the uneven conflict that ensues to be the spellbinding core of the movie with its twists and its variations of pace from creepy to violent, the outcome ever in doubt. Nothing dull here.Among the 3 leading characters, Kristi appears early in the film and her character is rather more strongly developed than the others, but her craziness seems to make her not quite real as an adult human: well, she's a psychopath. Her boyfriend (Dempsey) puts on a persuasive performance, and Boylan is very strong and totally convincing in a difficult role.I loved the south New Mexico desert and small-town scenes: few movies are made in that area, so Home Sweet Home did not have that stereotyped western look for a change. Instead, it has its own look and its unique story line. It's good to see emerging indie filmmakers with their own ideas succeed in what they set out to do! Evidently they did not try to make an arty film, but instead a breakout thriller in their own style, and in that they succeeded! Look for these names again.The movie took awards at the Albuquerque film festival where I saw it, and FYI is now available for pre-order on Amazon (search Movies and TV for "Home Sweet Home DVD"). Release and delivery from Amazon will be on June 4th. 2013.

With Pozitia Copilului (Child's Pose) the Romanian cinema seems to complete a cycle that started almost a decade ago with Moartea Domnului Lazarescu (The Death of Mr. Lazarescu). The path was marked by a number of prizes at important cinema festivals around the world, with the first candidacy of a Romanian film for an Academy Award, but more important by the recognition by viewers that Romania is one of the locations where some of the most interesting movies come from, and that a specific style, a consistent set of themes, and a typology of characters combine to make the Romanian cinema distinct from other film schools. It did help that many of the actors in these films are constant collaborators of the leading directors of the 'wave', some of them becoming familiar faces to world cinema spectators. Luminita Gheorghiu and Bogdan Dumitrache - the lead actors here - acted also in Moartea Domnului Lazarescu, while Vlad Ivanov was the evil figure in 4,3,2.As many of the good Romanian films in this period Calin Peter Netzer's movie can be seen and interpreted at multiple layers. One of them is composed of the social realities of Romania more than two decades after the fall of the communism. Class disparities are more obvious than in other places and contrast with the forced (and false) egalitarianism that dominated the Romanian society for most of the second half of the 20th century. The introductory scenes build for the viewer the context of the relations of the mid-upper class where the main heroes belong, with bourgeois occupations and family crisis, stylish social events and opera master classes. The obsessive relationship between the dominant mother and the spoiled son who seems to behave like an ingrate brute defines the second layer, the one of the personal relations between the characters. When the road accident that turns the world of the heroes upside down happens, the heroes will be obliged to make contact with the other Romania, the one of the pauper country people, with course manners but maybe with more character and moral strength. The system of relations and corruption is immediately put in motion by the mother, trying to protect her son and make him avoid the consequences of his behavior - a social comment about today's Romania which does not go lost neither for the Romanian nor for the foreign viewer. While this part is more clearly cut, there is no moral judgment made on the rest of the relations, and this is a smart choice made by the director.The rest is left to the actors and they are simply said wonderful. Luminita Gheorghiu as the possessive mother and Bogdan Dumitrache as the traumatized son who makes all the wrong moves at the wrong moments in order to cut-off the invisible umbilical cord play one of the most meaningful and highly charged mother-son relationships that I have seen lately. Most of the actors in the supporting cast give sincere and expressive performances, which I would rather describe not as acting but as living their roles. A few memorable scenes (the master class at the beginning and the final scene of the confrontation with the family of the kid killed in the accident) may live in the memory of the viewers even longer than the rest of the film. Dealing with a subject that could have easily turned into melodrama or soap opera Pozitia Copilului succeeds to make a sharp social comment that works well with the more universal story of a suffocating love which is touched by miscommunication and tragedy.

Gippi is what Student Of The Year was in 2012. And they are quite related - school life (instead of college life), competition & relationships.Riya Vij is sweet & plump, perfect for the lead character. She acts well, too, but in various attempts in trying to be cool, she stumbles midway. Divya Dutta is mature & good. Arbaz Kadwani is great and is the perfect brother. I could relate to him.The story isn't new to us. The plot has been MADE inventive with the inclusion of puberty, sexual organs & blah blah blah. While, Sonam Nair touches these "blah blah blah" (sensitive) topics deftly, she loses vision & the story-line crumbles to something else, which is why I mentioned SOTY before. Here, they vie for the post of Head-Girl. First half is genuine. Second half is acutely predictable & stands as the integral part in spoiling the whole movie-watching fun. With hugely ridiculous slapstick plot turns, it also has its side-stories which makes it either "indecent" or "mature" (depending on the viewer). Otherwise, Gippi has nice music, mediocre dialogs, good performances & average screenplay.Bring back the school memories with Gippi, but if you are a serious cinema buff, then you might wanna reconsider. Cute little 14-year olds having a strict diet plans & NOT gorging on ice-creams is a thing the filmmakers should have reconsidered.BOTTOM LINE: 4.1/10 for the fatso Gippi(who isn't as fat as she seems to be) who makes it watchable. The Dominican film industry has for the longest time been guilty of short sighted mentality. While film making is a business and this is true for Hollywood, Bollywood, Europe and everywhere, Dominican films have been disproportionately focused on making instant profits in the Dominican market and not given any attention to making exportable films that could in the end make even bigger profits. Low brow comedies directed at the masses, Dominican masses specifically, has been the norm. With that in mind, the announcement of a historical film, treating the subject of one of the conspirators that killed Dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, who for 31 years held absolute power over this Caribbean half island, was of course a ray of positive light. Serious, exportable and with a compelling premise. "El Teniente Amado" is the the story of Lieutenant Amado Garcia. A young officer in the Dominican Army who is assigned to Trujillo's convoy and made his personal military assistant. Something that he proudly shares with his cousin, Salvador Estrella Sadhala (Liche Ariza) and his girlfriend/bride to be Carmen Soto (Mercedes Renard). Unbeknownst to Amado, his future brother in law Felix Soto is a Trujillo opposer and his cousin Salvador is part of a conspiracy to kill the Dictator. A conspiration that history shows, Amado would also join.What follows is a very poorly edited film. The story takes place over two years since 1959 to June 2nd, 1961 and it all seems rushed. There are no transitions, just scene after scene thrown together. The acting was dis-par among the cast with some doing a good job like Liche Ariza and even with a caricature of Trujillo, Efrain Figueroa plays a convincing maniac. Prison Break's Amaury Nolasco plays a Dominican for the second time since 2007's Benchwarmers and this time it is not insulting. He talks like any Dominican in the Capital. The fault however is in the poor script. Terribly simplistic dialog, a story that soon loses focus on the eponymous character and then turns completely into a murder Trujillo plot and an extreme lack of character exploring. There are many instances in which the character of Amado could have been explored deeply. His relationship with Carmen, the position with Trujillo and more importantly his change of mind when deciding to kill the Dictator. Instead, what we get is a sudden change, characteristic of a very short feature. The whole movie seems like an ubber long short feature. So with bad directing, average script writing from a first timer and disjointed editing, what keeps this movie interesting for non Dominicans who might not have an emotional connection to the Trujillo story, is the fine acting by some of the actors who make up the cast. This is still quite possible the best Dominican film of the past two decades, but that is not saying much. It is a step forward, but a long road lies ahead.

A small time politician is running for public office with strong support from his daughter and her mid twenties friends. The mayoral race is close and the challenger is haunted with recurring accounts of an incident during his time as the fire chief. The character development for this indie film is well done with different story arcs in play. The script is snappy and plausible with noticeable use of "F" words in expected pointed situations. The cinematography is consistent except for a couple of too close, close-ups in news casts. Graphic violence in a couple of spots fit well with plot twists and are difficult to anticipate. The story arc keeps the viewer engaged. There are a couple of continuity flaws but not too distracting.

While I do like the Barbie movies in general- I really do think we need to put an end to the stereotype that Barbie movies are for little girls only, the Tinkerbell and My Little Pony franchise get the same treatment and they are much better than you think when they're given a chance- they have been going downhill lately. While I enjoyed Christmas Carol, Three Musketeers and the Mermaid movies, Fairy Secret and Fashion Fairytale were awful and I didn't care all that much for Princess and the Popstar either. I found myself, despite some ropey dialogue, really loving Barbie in the Pink Shoes. The top 3 Barbie movies for me are Nutcracker, Diamond Castle and Island Princess(really liked Swan Lake, Rapunzel, Princess and the Pauper and 12 Dancing Princess as well), but Pink Shoes is the best since Diamond Castle. The animation is beautiful, the colours reminding me a little of those used for the latest Tinkerbell movie, and the character movements seem to have more of a sense of freedom compared to the older Barbie entries. I also loved the music, it was a welcome return to the classical music that made Nutcracker and Swan Lake for example so enchanting and ballet fans(like me) will love the use of Swan Lake and Giselle, two of the all-time greats of the genre. The story is simple with some nice fairy-tale elements in the mix, it's also very sweet and charming and the closest to the spirit of the older Barbie movies than any of the movies since 12 Dancing Princesses. And it isn't a Barbie movie(or at least a good one) without a message to learn from, while it is a familiar one there is one and it is a good one and one that isn't pushed down the throat. The characters engage, Barbie is a likable and resourceful protagonist, like the older entries and any that aren't Fairy Secret or especially Fashion Fairytale(where she's a stereotypical brat). And the Snow Queen is every bit as icy as she sounds. The voice acting is solid too, having Kelly Sheridan is a big bonus as I felt some of the later movies suffered even more without her. All in all, really nice and the best entry of the franchise since Diamond Castle. There is no problem if you don't legitimately like it, just give it a chance without any kind of prejudices. 9/10 Bethany Cox

CineMava here...and I just saw "36 Saints" which I enjoyed very much. The suspense was built up nicely and the movie creeped me out. ( I know...I know, that was the whole point. Well I've got to tell you, it achieved it. ) I saw a talented group of young actors convincingly showing terror and fear. But leading the search for clues and justice were Franky G and Jeffrey DeSerrano who played the cops on this bizarre trail. They believably expressed New York's Finest...dealing with "just the facts," who wind up questioning their own religious beliefs in the process. I can't say much more without spoiling the fun for the rest of you, but I'd recommend the film, and ask this question: "are you one of them?"<< Shiver!! >>

Firstly I'm a fan of the genre but primarily a fan of film. The Dead 2: India in my opinion really improved on the areas which if I'm critical the first film needed improving on. The acting by Joseph Millson was nothing short of emphatic, his emotion really shone through and for this the film is much more mainstream as opposed to being pigeon holed as a genre movie. I also enjoyed the pacing of the film and the gorgeous vistas played a part on the overall quality of the film. The bigger budget that the Ford's clearly had on this movie was well utilised and the effects were first class. If you are a fan of the genre then I'm sure you will enjoy this but more importantly if you are a fan of film them go out and see this, it really is a great movie!

Some rotten tomatoes needed for the producers of this trivial piece. It is your classic good girl meets insensitive guy who is also a player story, There is so many girls getting it on with various men that it is not possible to keep up with which sassy character is linked with which stereotypical player. The men treat the women like objects, the women treat each other like objects and think of the men as suppliers. And in their newest artistic veneering of their oldest and most popular material, "Cheech & Chong's Animated Movie" paints a new face on their old faves Containing classic cartoon infused bits such as "Let's Make a Dope Deal," "Drive In," and the iconic "Dave's Not Here," the film is definitely a niche release, leaving little orientation to the uninitiated. For those familiar with the dynamic doobie duo however, the film is a laced love letter to the heyday of Cheech and Chong, who received much of their turn-and-burn earnings from the 1978 stash-starter "Up In Smoke." And while Animated Movie wreaks less of the early films, and more like Comedy Central's short-lived series "Shorties Watchin' Shorties" – an on-par animated vehicle in which stand-up acts are morphed into cartoonish mini movies – the groundwork laid by the early days of Cheech and Chong comes alive in this priming for a whole new generation of eager beavers. Never ones to stay stoned and silent, three commentary tracks top the extras menu, with a good burn given by directors Eric and Branden Chambers and Lou Adler on all things production. Tommy Chong and son Paris provide a great track that explores some known and not-so-known insights. And with the third pass, Cheech and Chong together gaze through the glaze and haze of their off-and-on careers taking viewers on a bong-filled ride fueled by cannabis and comedy. Based on a true incident, ANKUR ARORA MURDER CASE focuses not just on the negligence in the operation theatre, but also throws light on the justice mechanism in our country.In a short Dr. Ramesh (Arjun Mathur) was a junior under Dr. Asthana (Kay Kay Menon) of Shekhawat General Hospital. He loves n had a live-in relationship with Dr. Riya (Vishakha Singh), his co-intern. An 8-year-old boy Ankur (Vishesh Tiwari) dies due to Dr. Asthana's medical negligence n at a point of time Ramesh realizes that a good surgeon is not necessarily a good human being as well. Together with Ankur's mother Nandini (Tisca Chopra], Ramesh declared an uneven Battle for what is right. A battle for justice against his mentor, the hospital and the love of his life.Regarding performances everyone was Up to the mark. Kay Kay Menon is one of my all-time favorite n once again he gave an International level performance. But the surprise package in second half was Paoli Dam. She is Sharpen in every movie. Hats off to the power pack acting of her in the court. The Dialogues are extremely good n sometimes make you to give claps unintentionally in the hall. Scriptwriting also tightens your sit belt as the movie progress. But one point I must say that it good to see this type of movie in future song less.On a whole A BRILLIANT Movie and it deserves a watch by every person of the Urban Society.NOTE: - Being in Medical field I know good surgeon is not necessarily a good human. During my work I also had come in contact with such persons n gained lots of experience. But please don't ask for examples 
